Pennard Primary School
It has been another busy and exciting year at Pennard Primary School. We recently regained the highly prestigious Basic Skills Quality Mark, we were awarded the Healthy Schools Phase Two Award and we were recognised for our excellent floral displays in the Swansea in Bloom Award Scheme. The development of our school grounds is almost complete. Phase Two of the Cydcoed funded school grounds project was launched in August 2006. There has been significant progress in the last twelve months, including the official opening of the Fitness Trim Trail in July by Ospreys and New Zealand rugby player, Justin Marshall. Some of the outdoor development include the construction of a hill fort, a large shelter for outdoor activities has been built in the infant yard, the maze has been constructed, a story telling area has been created out of recycled trees, buddy benches and raised planting beds have been installed and the two hundred native trees planted last year are growing well. Some of the older children in the school recently completed their Cycling Proficiency Training on our newly painted road system on the junior yard. The children were trained, and presented with certificates, by the local Police Community Support Officers. The Green Finger Gang at Pennard Primary School continues to meet once a week to maintain their gardens in the school grounds. Once again the school was very successful in the Swansea in Bloom competition, receiving a bronze award for our vegetable planting and highly commended for our raised beds, planters and pots. The ECO Committee is also planning to build a greenhouse out of recycled plastic bottles, and last year raised money for a bicycle rack cover which we also hope to install soon. As part of Phase Three of the Healthy Schools’ Initiative, pupils will receive Heartstart training in emergency life support techniques, and we will also be using the Trim Trail to develop fitness and healthy lifestyles. The school continues its link with the Playgroup from the community hall. The young children and their parents enjoyed visiting the school to watch the Early Years perform their Christmas play and will join together for an Easter Egg Hunt. The school has developed links with Ysgol Crug Glas, and are working in close partnership in the Forest Schools initiative. The Surgery building adjacent to the school is now open, and we hope to put some of our work on ‘Healthy Schools’ on display there shortly. As you can see, these are very exciting and busy times at Pennard Primary School S.Daviesd
