For sixty years, the Gower Society has been working for the betterment of Gower as an area of beauty, an area of richly diverse habitat and a place of historic interest.
Gower, for us, is not only the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the peninsula, but the whole of the lordship of Gower, which covers approximately the same area as is currently administered by the City & County of Swansea.
Our aims are: • to encourage a love and appreciation of Gower • to preserve its character • to safeguard its Rights of Way and open spaces • to ensure public access to its coasts and beaches • to encourage the study of its antiquities and history
In order to achieve these aims: • we arrange a programme of some 150 events a year, including walks, talks, visits and folk dancing • we walk and clear footpaths, reporting obstructions to the City & County Footpaths Officer • we make a careful study of all proposals for development, and where necessary, make our views known to the local authority and / or the National Assembly of Wales • we publish an outstanding annual Journal which includes articles on all aspects of Gower, past and present and constitutes a highly valued record of research on Gower • we publish general and specialised books on the area • we support other Societies active in protecting the beauty and history of Gower • we award grants to help projects in Gower.
Conservation is not about keeping things as they are; still less about turning the clock back. It is about creating a better future. It is about managing change in such a way that both protects and enhances the essential character of Gower - its natural beauty, its farmed landscape, its history, its diverse flora and fauna. It is about balancing protection with the legitimate well-being of the community.
