Pennard First Responder Scheme is a voluntary scheme, whose purpose is to provide emergency first aid cover until such time as an ambulance arrives. It, like all other First Responder Schemes, was set up to deal primarily with incidents of cardiac arrest/collapse. However, it can also cover other types of calls where the use of oxygen or first aid is required. Since our inception in April 2003, we have attended approximately 90 calls, which have been located primarily in Pennard, Southgate, Kittle, Bishopston and Murton and have also been called out to Ilston and Nicholaston.
The Scheme is run in conjunction with the Wales Ambulance Trust which trains local volunteers in CPR (resuscitation techniques), the use of a defibrillator and emergency first aid. When a 999 call is received at Ambulance Control, a decision is made as to whether that call falls within our remit and if so, we are then contacted by Control on a dedicated mobile phone.
Despite extensive publicity of the Scheme, we are still in need of more volunteers. (At present we are only able to cover about half of the week). We are also fundraising with a view to purchasing more equipment and also a replacement defibrillator. So if you live in Pennard, Southgate, Kittle, Bishopston or Murton and are interested in putting your name forward for training and/or assisting us in our fundraising, please telephone Scheme Co-ordinator Betty Jenkins on 232955.
