ST MARY'S CHURCH, PENNARD along with many other things in Pennard ,is somewhat pgpennardch02shrouded in mystery. It is believed that the present Church is the second to be built, the original being built in the old village near Pennard Castle. The great sand-storm in Medieval times encroached upon the old village and buried it. The original church, however, is known to have been standing in the late 13th Century.
St Mary's church is built of local stone, believed to be from the old church itself along with the large wooden beam supporting the gallery. The Church was greatly restored in the 19th Century and the barrel organ, which was once the centre of attraction, is now in St Fagan's Folk Museum, Cardiff. A new stained glass window was dedicated by the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon in 2000.

St ILLTYD'S CHURCH, ILSTON Hidden away in a corner of the secluded hamlet of Ilston, surrounded by trees. One tree, a yew tree is reputed to be as old as the present Church; it pgilstonch02was common to plant a yew tree in the churchyard on completion of the building.
It is one of the oldest churches in Gower - some believe it is the oldest. Its association dates back to the 7th Century and monks used the site for worship.
Restoration began in 1988 when the roof was replaced. Heritage Lottery funding was obtained to rebuild the bell tower and a grant from the Historic Churches Preservation Trust enabled the reopening of the original Chapel at the base of the 11th Century tower. St Illtyd's is unique inside in that visitors can chart its history back more than 6 centuries with an incumbents wall dating back to 1341.
The nave is unusual being low and rude as well as being large. The chancel arch not being in the centre gives a crooked appearance.

St TEILO CHURCH, BISHOPSTON takes its name from the patron St Teilo is an enchantingpgbishchurch02 feature in the heart of the village of Bishopston. It is positioned in a secluded spot where only those who are familiar with its location can find it.
Ancient records date the church to about AD480 - 490. The present construction would seem to date it as late 12th early 13th Century.
It was established as a pinnacle of fortification for the village as well as a permanent place of worship for the community after the Norman invasion. When walking around this fascinating building you can admire the rudely built Norman masonry.

MOUNT PISGAH was founded in 1822 by Diana, Lady Barham (1762-1823).
Lady Barham was the only child of Admiral Sir Charles Middleton (1762-1813) and of Margaret Gambier (d1792). In 1790 she married Gerard Noel Edwardes and succeeded to the barony on the death of her father.
pisgah02She first visited Gower in 1813 and was distressed by the 'darkness of the place and the spiritual destitution of the people'. She returned later and took up residence at Fairybill, Reynoldston, (now a hotel). From 1814 to 1822 she founded six churches on the Gower at Burry Green, Cheriton, Penclawdd, Newton, Pilton Green and, lastly, Parkmill.
Baroness Barham was ahead of her time in that she 'had no inclination towards any particular denomination during her early years in Gower, her main concern was to further the Gospel here in the most effective manner irrespective of denominational results'.
In 2000, the Barham Centre was founded at Mount Pisgah to carry on her ideals and the building is gradually being restored as a place for the wider service of the community. Not only for worship but as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, recitals and local societies. When it seemed likely that the village Post Office might be lost the minister offered it a home in the church where it still remains.
